Virgin Nail Art Sponging

February 7, 2012 12:18 am · Posted by She Shops Makeup

Hey everyone!

This is a gonna be a really quick post to show you my Nails of the Week. It is also my first attempt at sponging (if that's what it's called).

I was home yesterday watching Nanny McPhee 2 on TV (previously recorded), and decided to paint my nails while doing so. Not sure if it was the magic sparkles on the show that inspired me to try and recreate a "dispersed look" on my nails. Probably irrelevant because I would have been inspired to use glitter instead to represent sparkles! Ok, I was bored, and decided to add some fun to plain old single color nails.

Anyway, I took the only facial sponge I could find at home (a QVC latex sponge from Watsons), cut it into small pieces and embarked on my sponging adventure.

Steps taken:

  1. Paint China Glaze Temptation Carnation all over the nail (2 coats)
  2. Use a small piece of sponge, dip it in China Glaze Seaspray and lightly dab over top half of nail
  3. Let first layer of Seaspray dry before dabbing a second layer at the tip of the nail to achieve a gradient look
  4. Use a dotting tool (large and small sizes) to dot OPI by Nicole's Studio Mama on one side of the nail

As you can see, the end result looks pretty ok from afar, but a mess when viewed up-close! I didn't quite achieve what I had in mind. Perhaps I was using a wrong sponge. My sponge did not have too many "holes" to nicely produce the dispersed gradient polish look. So, to mask the mess and draw attention away from it, I decided to create a gradient design using a few simple dots.

Have you tried sponging? If so, any idea what went wrong? Do I need to use a special type of sponge?

I've always toyed with the idea of trying but me and being experimental with nails.... I do like how the gradient looks from the pictures, very nice color combination! Laughing out loud

very pretty! i will try this colour combo soon! when ever i do sponging i will do the tips first then move up to the middle of the nail. that way most of the polish will be at the tips. also i like to blend the middle part with a little base polish, for me it gives a better gradient. maybe you can give this method a try!

@icyabstract Haha you should try! It's really fun.. though the gradient wasn't quite what I initially imagined.. still fun nonetheless.
@madlynny Oh! So I should actually start from the tip first.. I started from the middle down. Shall try your tip next time. Thanks!! Smiling
